Art Therapy

Picture
Art Therapy is a form of self-exploration and self-expression within a safe containing environment. Unlike traditional forms of Psychotherapy it offers the opportunity for a triangular relationship between the client, therapist and the art work. There is not a requirement for any previous art experience as there is no aesthetic or diagnostic assessment of the imagery. It is a particularly helpful way of working for people who find it hard to express themselves verbally as art is the primary mode of communication.

Sessions offer the opportunity to choose a subject with meaning for the individual using media from a range of varied materials. Each person will use the process in a different way. Art Therapy offers the opportunity for healing, change and personal growth in a secure environment using natural creative processes.

Although the imagery is produced in the presence of the therapist the artist has ownership of the artwork. Learning comes from the mark-making process and dialogue with the therapist. Sessions provide time for reflection and the possibility of reviewing work in sequence to illustrate a personal journey. Exploring imagery can be like looking into a very clear mirror and provides the opportunity for seeing, and having accepted, parts of the personality that were previously unknown. Difficult feelings and underlying causes of problems can be explored at a pace that suits the individual. In this way the imagery can become a metaphor for life.

I have a B.A. in Art and Design and am a State Registered Art Therapist and member of the Health Professions Council and abide by their professional and ethical codes. I have appropriate professional insurance.
